Paul T. Busceni, Ed.D., Dean
School of Education

Dr. Paul T. Busceni graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1991 with a B.S. in Economics. He attended Roosevelt University for graduate school and graduated in 1996 with an M.A., and 2000 with a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Organizational Change. Currently, Dr. Busceni serves as the Dean of the School of Education at Kendall College in Chicago.

Dr. Busceni’s professional background stems from K-12 education, beginning with his teaching math, algebra, and pre-algebra in a parochial school to seventh and eighth grade students. Furthering his desire for quality teaching and learning, he began his administrative tenure in northern Lake County, serving as Principal and Assistant Superintendent. He enjoyed several years of working with dedicated and committed professionals, and collaborative, involved communities while leading initiatives to inspire teachers and engage learners. He led curricular improvement initiatives, building-based morale initiatives, professional development workshops on teaching pedagogy and educational leadership, worked extensively with various communities to further his commitment to the home-school partnership in the learning continuum, and established a new chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), and Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS) at the middle school level.

While serving as Principal, Dr. Busceni did adjunct work for University of Wisconsin’s Department of Teacher Education where he taught methods courses for PreK-9 math and science, and supervised student teachers. In addition, he did adjunct work for Argosy University’s Chicago campus’ School of Education, where he eventually became Associate Professor and Program Chair for their on-campus and online School of Education.

Dr. Busceni is a member of Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education), Association for the Supervision of Curriculum Development (ASCD), National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), and National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). His doctoral research involved a comprehensive analysis of middle school block scheduling, which has since sparked further research interests in middle school leadership, as well as the academic writing process. He has been a national presenter, speaking mainly about leadership issues in education, and academic writing. He loves to write, and aside from his research and publication endeavors, is an aspiring non-fiction author.

Marsha Shigeyo Hawley, Associate Professor
Early Childhood Education 

Marsha Shigeyo Hawley graduated from California State University Fresno with a degree in child development with graduate studies and teaching credentials specializing in infancy through high school. She received her master’s degree from Erikson Institute (then affiliated with Loyola University) where she received her Illinois teaching credentials in early childhood education and elementary education, with special education approval.

Ms. Hawley began her professional career as the director of a Head Start site in a migrant farm worker in central California in 1978, and has established and directed infant toddler child care centers in Illinois. She has experience as a teacher, director, parent-infant educator and parent educator. She was a Family Life Educator with the University of Illinois Extension, bringing research based information regarding families with young children to the general public for nearly ten years.

She was previously part of the faculty in the Infant Studies Program at Erikson Institute, a graduate school in child development. She has experience teaching graduate courses specifically targeting professionals in child care, and directed the Infant Toddler Mentoring Project at Erikson, a program striving to enhance quality infant toddler center based child care.

Ms. Hawley serves on several statewide steering committees and is currently involved in the development of the Illinois Registry, Gateways to Opportunity (Professional Development Advisory Council), Illinois Infant Toddler Credential, Illinois Association for Infant Mental Health and the Workforce Task Force for the Governor’s Early Learning Council. Her work with community based organizations, Chicago Public Schools Early Childhood Education Department and other early childhood work groups helps to contribute to the larger growth in the field. She has received several awards for her innovative team programs developed with the University of Illinois, and has served as a validator for NAEYC’s accreditation program for early childhood education.

Tywanda Jiles.jpg Tywanda Jiles, Assistant Professor
Early Childhood Education 

Tywanda Jilescurrently serves as anassistant professor and is the Director of the Lesson Plan Portfolio. She has a master’s degree in early childhood education, Illinois Type 04 certification with a special education approval, an Early Intervention Credential in Developmental Therapy, and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in early childhood education. Along with several years of experience teaching preschool and kindergarten, she opened and ran a branch of Boys and Girls of America.She is also a Child Development Associate (CDA) Advisor and Representative.Ms. Jiles serves asthe Golden Apple Scholars Liaison for Kendall College, as well as the Director of Lesson Plan Portfolios.

Early Childhood Education 

Kinyata McGee-Swope has a master’s degree in early childhood leadership and advocacy, Illinois Type 04 certification with an endorsement in Special Education, and a Credential in Developmental Therapy, as well as Infant Specialist Certification.Kinyata taught for several years at the primary level in the Chicago Public Schools and also directed an infant-toddler program.She started her own educational consulting company providing professional development and workshops to early education professionals, parents, and centers, including Head Start.Ms. McGee-Swope also serves as the Director of Clinical Practice for the School of Education.

Paula Brown, Adjunct Faculty & UCLC Coordinator
Early Childhood Education 

Ms. Brown comes to Kendall’s Early Childhood Education Program with a diverse background working with young children over the past 12 years. Prior to her current position as a part-time instructor at Kendall, Ms. Brown was a Program Specialist for the Great Lakes Head Start Quality Network for Federal Region 5, a private consultant to Head Start and child care programs in IL in the areas of health, disabilities, and literacy, a substitute Early Childhood Education Teacher, a Health & Disabilities Coordinator for a multi-site Head Start/Early Head Start Program in Chicago, and an adjunct Early Childhood Education faculty member at St. Augustine College. She is credentialed in IL as a Developmental Specialist in Early Intervention and nationally as a health educator. Her educational background includes a Master of Arts in Early Childhood Special Education, a Master of Public Health, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She also holds IL teaching certification in Special Education, which includes endorsements as a Learning Behavior Specialist and approval in Early Childhood Special Education. She is a member of the Council for Exceptional Children and the Lake County Child Care Coalition.

At Kendall, Ms. Brown is primarily involved with teaching courses at the University Center Campus in Grayslake, IL and coordinating programming thru this extension campus. In the past, she has taught ECE 300, all the courses in the Early Childhood Special Education track (EDU 291, 441, & 442), and supervised student teachers in their field placements. She believes that students learn best thru the practical application of their studies and sharing of their own personal experiences in the classroom.

Ms. Brown is married and has one toddler-aged son. She feels that her son and his playmates provide her with new daily perspectives on how young children learn, develop, and thrive.
