Michelle Coussens, Dean of the School of Business
Michelle Coussens is Dean of the School of Business at Kendall College in Chicago, Illinois. Since 1934, Kendall College has offered engaging, specialized fields of study that generate employment-ready graduates poised for professional leadership positions in services industries around the world. Reporting to the Provost, Ms. Coussens oversees and manages all aspects of the Business School, including faculty and curriculum selection and assessment, as well as program direction. As part of Kendall's academic leadership team, she participates in the College's general education curriculum, assessment, and faculty development initiatives, providing vision and perspective.

Ms. Coussens also owns and operates Plan B Consulting. Services span teaching how and why to prepare a business plan, assisting in plan development, and business plan review. In addition, she facilitates planning and other business retreats and conducts market analysis and competitive intelligence for various types of entrepreneurs and organizations nationwide. In 2005, she developed, and still teaches, a two-day business planning course for NeighborWorks® America, a Congressionally-funded organization providing funding and technical assistance to community development entities nationwide. Michelle is also on the faculty of the American Management Association where she teaches strategic planning seminars. Through her business, she publishes a monthly newsletter, Planning Possibilities, which is currently distributed to more than 2,400 clients and contacts.

While previously working full-time as a senior analyst in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Michelle also taught at DePaul University as an adjunct instructor for the management department. Prior to working at the Fed, she spent several years working in the insurance arena. She has performed various managerial and technical roles throughout her 20+ year career and has particular expertise and demonstrated success in business planning and market analysis, as well as in project management and business development.

Michelle also holds particular personal interest in researching and assisting non-profits. Her work in this arena originally began through her engagement in applied research focused on community development, most specifically related to financial literacy initiatives. In 2004, she published an article titled “Beyond Financial Education: Changing Financial Behavior” in the Federal Reserve publication Profitwise News & Views and in 2005 published an article for the same publication titled “Toward Financial Literacy: Program Leaders Comment on Evaluation and Impact”. The full paper version of this article was accepted by and published in the American Council on Consumer Interests’ 2006 Annual. She and Chicago Fed co-author Robin Newberger also published papers regarding the role of insurance in improving financial access and wealth-building for moderate income consumers in two Federal Reserve publications in spring 2008.

Ms. Coussens holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from Northwestern University and a Masters in Business Administration, with a concentration in Marketing, from DePaul University. She has served on the advisory board of Provena Pine View Care Center (a non-profit healthcare organization), holds several professional insurance designations, and belongs to The Fox Valley Entrepreneurs and the Chicago Women in Publishing.

Michelle lives in Batavia, a suburb of Chicago, where she and her husband spend their "free time" navigating and surviving life with three very busy teenagers.

Bruce Bloom, Senior Lecturer
Dr. Bruce Bloom holds a JD from Chicago Kent College of Law, a DDS from University of Illinois Medical Center, and a BS in Biology from University of Illinois Urbana. Dr. Bloom’s business experience spans law, healthcare, clinical research, insurance, regulatory affairs, product development, not-for-profit and public speaking. He is currently President and Chief Science Officer of Partnership for Cures, a 501c3 that raises funds for research to speed treatments to patients. In the 1990’s as Senior VP-Healthcare Professional Liability at both Kemper Casualty Company and CNA HealthPro, he was responsible for all corporate functions including sales and marketing, operations, finance, IT, legal, risk management, HR and regulatory affairs. Dr. Bloom served as the International Director of Professional Relations and Clinical Affairs at Bausch and Lomb Oral Care Division and as Vice-President of the consulting firm American Dental Examiners. Dr. Bloom founded two successful art businesses and owned and operating a thriving franchise food business. Dr. Bloom was a senior lecturer at Northwestern University for 6 years and at the University of Illinois Chicago for 15 years, and has taught Business Law and Risk Management to thousands of healthcare and other professionals since 1985. He currently serves as a Medical Research Advisor to the LUNGevity Foundation, a Client Advisor to Northwestern Mutual Financial Network and is the host of the Clinician’s Roundtable on ReachMD, XM 157.

David Koehler, MBA, Senior Lecturer
David Koehler obtained his undergraduate degree in Business Management from Illinois State University in 1983. He began his collegiate teaching career upon graduation from Governors State University in 1991, where he received his MBA. His emphasis was in marketing.

David began his professional career upon graduation from ISU in retail management, working for the Walgreen Company. Developing and mentoring individuals into store leadership positions was a strong area of focus for David. Upon graduation from graduate school, David found his true passion, teaching, as an adjunct instructor at College of DuPage.

With an opportunity to pursue his passion, David left the Walgreen Company in 1995 and began teaching part time at several schools with the dream of a full time position. He also incorporated the Diamond Cut Masonry Construction Company with his brother as a means of utilizing his entrepreneurial drive and to also hone his business skills. His teaching dream became reality in 2001 as he was offered a full time lecturer position at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

David was recently promoted to Clinical Assistant Professor of Marketing at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has twice been honored as the recipient of the Distinguished Silver Circle Teaching Award for Excellence. He has been recently awarded the College of Business Outstanding Faculty Service Award for 2006. He is also the faculty advisor for several student organizations such as the American Marketing Association (AMA) and the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO). He has been at Dominican University as an adjunct professor for the past two years.

David lives in Lombard and was raised in Palos Park, where most of his siblings and their families still reside. He has lived an active life of adventure and has been to over twenty countries pursuing such outdoor activities as hiking, fly fishing and mountain climbing. He has spent several summers in East Africa and has been involved in several conservation projects in these regions. He loves to read, write in his journal and travel. He embraces each day with a sense of passion and appreciation and feels truly blessed to be a teacher who hopefully makes a difference.

Leonard B. McKendrick, Senior Lecturer
Dr. Leonard B. McKendrick holds a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in Organizational Behavior, a M.B.A. from Xavier University, and a B.A. from Morehouse College. Dr. McKendrick’s corporate experience spans retail, banking, and consumer products. He served in a managerial position at The Procter & Gamble Company for 5 years. He has several years of experience teaching and advising high school, undergraduate, and MBA students. Dr. McKendrick has been an independent management consultant for the past 10 years. He focuses on coaching individual and work team effectiveness, managerial assessment and development, and workplace diversity. He is very passionate about the individual and group performance, learning, and development process.

Sascha Cocron, Senior Lecturer
Sascha Cocron holds an MBA with honors from The University of Chicago, and received his B.A. in philosophy and mathematics from St. John’s College, Annapolis.  Mr. Cocron has extensive experience in corporate strategy consulting and in entrepreneurial ventures, having been a founding member of two venture-funded high technology start-ups. Mr. Cocron was a Principal at Mercer Management Consulting, one of the world’s premier strategy consulting firms.  Stationed in the London and Washington, DC offices, Mr. Cocron consulted to senior executives of Global 1000 clients in the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, and the United States.  His past casework experience includes strategy development and M&A advisory work in numerous industries including: telecommunications, oil and gas, high technology manufacturing, information services, professional services, hospitality, and entertainment. In addition to his consulting work, Mr. Cocron was in charge of professional staff training for Mercer’s Washington office, and developed and instructed courses in marketing, strategy, micro-economics, and corporate finance to new Analyst (undergraduate) and Associate (MBA-level) hires. A native of Austria, Mr. Cocron is bilingually fluent in German and English.

Todd Allen, Senior Lecturer
Todd Allen holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, and received his B.A. (magna cum laude) in Chemistry from Carleton College.  Mr. Allen has extensive strategic marketing consulting and management experience in the travel, hospitality, and financial services fields.  Mr. Allen was a Principal at Mercer Management Consulting, one of the world’s premier strategy consulting firms.  Based in the Boston and New York City offices, Mr. Allen provided marketing and strategic counsel to senior executives of clients in the hotel, cruise, travel, information services and financial services industries.  In the late 1990s, Mr. Allen served as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development for American Classic Voyages Company – a holding company operating two boutique cruise lines.  Mr. Allen was responsible for the development and construction of 4 new cruise ships.  In addition, he served as interim Vice President of Marketing for both cruise lines.  Mr. Allen later served as Vice President, Marketing and Travel for AAA Chicago Motor Club and Vice President – Brand Management for the Auto Club Group (holding company for six AAA Clubs operating in eight states in the Upper Midwest).  Currently, Mr. Allen is Vice President of Marketing for Safeway Insurance Group of Westmont, IL.  He serves on the Board of Directors of Camp Manito-wish YMCA in Boulder Junction, WI.

Tron Fu, Senior Lecturer
Tron Fu has an MBA from The University of Chicago and received his B. S. in Computer Science and Anthropology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Mr. Fu is an experienced entrepreneur, having founded and run several commercially successful internet ventures including Sol Tec, an internet service provider, and Riverwatcher, a web application middleware developer. Mr. Fu has remained active in the entrepreneurial community of the state of Illinois, and is a member of the Illini-Entrepreneurship Center Network Award Committee. At present, Mr. Fu advises companies interested in doing business in China, focusing on the entertainment, fashion, and publishing industries. Mr. Fu is also a sought-after guest lecturer, teaching entrepreneurship and value creation at The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, Tianjing University of Technology (China), Lake Forest College, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Mike Harley, Senior Lecturer
Mike Harley holds an MBA from The University of Chicago, a J. D. from Vanderbilt University, and is a Monbusho Fellow. He served as a Researcher at Tohoku University (Japan).  Mr. Harley has extensive senior management experience in several multi-national corporations.  Specializing in growth strategy development and mergers and acquisitions, Mr. Harley successfully developed and executed growth strategies at Schneider Electric S.A., Pharmacia/Monsanto, M.A. Hanna Company, and Eastman Kodak Company/Eastman Chemical Company.  Mr. Harley also ran several growth businesses at Schneider Electric North America with combined P&L responsibility in excess of $600 million. He brings a broad experience in general management, sales, marketing, corporate development, as well as a diverse global and cultural background. At present, Mr. Harley is CEO of GrowthPhases LLC, a management consulting firm specializing in creating and implementing successful growth strategies for companies in technology manufacturing, specialty chemical, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries. Mr. Harley serves on the Board of Advisors of Furman University where he graduated with honors and served as President of the Student Body.

David Long, Senior Lecturer
David Long holds an MBA in marketing from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management and his B.A. in philosophy and mathematics from St. Johns College, Annapolis. Mr. Long has extensive marketing & sales, business turnaround, and corporate entrepreneurship experience. Over the past eight years, Mr. Long developed new companies and businesses lines for Educate, Inc. and Laureate Education, Inc. (both formerly Sylvan Learning Systems, Inc.). Mr. Long launched Educate, Inc.’s public school tutoring business, growing the organization from idea to a $25 million business serving 25,000 students within a two and half year period. He has also served as Vice President of Product Management for an educational software company and Director of eLearning for an online education company that produced courses with leading US universities. Mr. Long also serves as Treasurer and sits on the Board of Directors of Sports4Kids, a national non-profit dedicating to increasing sports and play opportunities for public school students. He lives with his wife in Baltimore, MD.
