Kendall College Welcomes New Faculty Member Deborah Popely to School of Hospitality Management

Popely, founder of non-profit Green Events Source, brings expertise in sustainability in events and hospitality industries to Kendall

Chicago-October 26, 2012-Kendall College announced the addition of new full-time faculty member Deborah Popely to the School of Hospitality Management. Popely brings more than 25 years of experience as an event planner and meeting facilitator, and more than 10 years of experience as a   sustainability consultant and educator to her position at Kendall.

Popely is the founding executive director of Green Events Source, a non-profit dedicated to increasing sustainability in the events and hospitality industries. She is also the founding president of the Green Meeting Industry Council of Chicago, where she serves on the board of directors for educational programming. In addition, Popely is chair of the host committee for the 2013 Global Sustainable Meetings and Events Conference in Chicago.

“Kendall is committed to providing our students with the latest knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the global workforce,” said Emily Williams Knight, president of Kendall College. “Ms. Popely is a well-known figure in the hospitality industry, and we are pleased to have her join our School of Hospitality Management team. I know our students will greatly benefit from her knowledge and expertise, particularly in the fields of sustainability and event management.”

Popely has written extensively on green events and related topics, and has served as a presenter and keynote speaker for local, regional and national industry organizations including Hospitality and Sales Marketing Association International (HSMAI), Destination Marketing Association (DMAI), Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), Meeting Planners International (MPI), and the Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC). She published the Green Events Sourcebook, a multi-media sustainability toolkit for event planners and suppliers, and has contributed to dozens of industry publications on the topic of sustainability. Popely is an approved trainer on Green Meetings and Events for GMIC Global.

On Tuesday, October 30, Popely will present at the Meetings Technology Expo in Rosemont, Ill. Her session, “Roadmap to Green Meetings & Events: How to Introduce Cloud-Based Solution & Tablet Technology,” will cover how event planners can cater to green expectations through the use of the latest technology and strategy. Guests will learn how to develop a checklist of items that can be greened, estimate their CO2 footprint reductions and cost savings, and what technology can help them achieve green objectives.
