Kristin Nelson, Business ’12, loves her industry because “there is never a dull moment running your own business. I never get bored because each day brings new challenges. The best thing about my job besides the kids I get to teach is the variety of tasks you get to undertake each day.” Kristin opened Constructive Chaos, where she is a Co-Owner and the Art Director, in March 2012. The Kendall College Alumni Association caught up with her to talk about her time at Kendall and get her advice for incoming or current students pursuing a degree in business.
I loved the atmosphere. It reminded me of a big family. Being an older returning student I wanted small class sizes with a lot of personal attention from faculty, so Kendall was a perfect fit for me.
How did Kendall College prepare you for running your own business, Constructive Chaos?
Kendall’s business school helped me prepare for all phases of my small business from marketing and project management to human recourses and working with customers. I loved that the instructors at Kendall were working in the business world today and were so in touch with Chicago’s business community. I gained quite a few leads and contacts while I was in school. Not to mention I made a lot of friends that still help me in my daily business.
What advice would you give to an incoming business student?
The Kendall College staff are fantastic. I would remember to “pick their brains” and get all the help you can from each professor. Find something you love to do to motivate yourself. School is much easier if you have concrete goals.
If you are starting your own business make sure you have at least double the capital you think you need to sustain the business for three years, including all your personal expenses. Be ready to put in long hours and don’t forget to ask for help.
What was your most memorable experience at Kendall College?
I think the most memorable day was the day my group presented our Capstone Project. We had a great team who worked well together and I thought we did a great job. It was fun to see it all come together!
