Hospitality Students Help "Green" Chicago Event

By Estefania Veraza, Kendall College School of Hospitality Management Student

What an exciting weekend! Who would have thought that volunteering would be so much fun? The GREY GOOSE® Beach Polo World Cup 2011 took place on Chicago’s North Avenue Beach October 1 – 2.  It was a fascinating event full of elegant people, fashion, sportsmanship, and all in all a big party.

Inspired by Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s commitment to the development of environmentally friendly initiatives, the GREY GOOSE® Beach Polo World Cup proudly brought a more sustainable event to Chicago. For this important task, School of Hospitality Management Assistant Professor Sue Tinnish was part of the “Green Team” for which I volunteered. One aspect of our job was to organize the recycling stations by helping divert material from the trash into a recycling and composting stream. A second aspect to volunteering was to survey attendees about their mode of transportation to the event. This data will be used to calculate the carbon footprint of the event. As volunteers, our contribution went beyond that as we educated the average consumer to think green.

But contributing to our environment was not the only thing I took away! The experience was a fabulous inside look at the event. I was able to observe and learn about the decoration, food and beverage, and entertainment. It was also interesting to see the level of sponsorship at the event. Fogo de Chao and Union Sushi provided the food and the entire event was branded and sponsored by Grey Goose. A VIP tent created an exclusive experience for some guests. Other sponsors of the event were JW Marriott, The New York Times, La Martina, Gascon, Comcast, and Lufthansa.

I was impressed with the vision of the talented organizers that made this event happen, Lou Vasta, Lora Gartner, Fred Paul and ACT Productions from Miami, which produced the very first polo beach event. What an amazing experience! I can’t wait for the next event to learn more!
