Computing Requirements for Students

Kendall College requires students to have access to computing and internet resources.  Computers and internet access are available in Kendall College’s computer lab; however, many students have their own computing resources.

To help ensure success, students should be proficient using e-mail, the Internet, and common desktop productivity software.  Listed here are the minimum computer specifications.

Recommended Setup

  • Internet access required (broadband is recommended as students with dial-up may experience degraded performance)
  • Windows 7 or higher or Mac OS X with virtualization software (like Parallels with Windows OS)
  • 2GB of RAM, minimum
  • 200GB hard drive, minimum
  • DVD drive
  • Speakers and/or headphones (particularly if taking on-line courses)
  • Ink-jet or laser printer
  • Portable media (thumb drive)

Software Requirements

  • Web browser (Internet Explorer ver. 11 or higher; or Firefox ver. 28 or higher; Google Chrome ver. 41 or higher)
  • Firefox is the recommended browser for Blackboard
  • Microsoft Office 2010 or higher
  • Adobe Reader ver. 11 or higher
  • Adobe Flash Player ver. 12.0 or higher
  • Apple QuickTime ver. 7.7 or higher
  • Windows Media Player ver. 11 or higher
  • Anti-virus software installed, running, and kept current by promptly installing the upgrades and patches made available by the software manufacturer.  There are a number of free anti-virus software options (e.g., Norton Symantec; Microsoft Essentials; AVG Free).

Additional Technology Recommendations

Some programs may require additional technology requirements that are not mentioned above. Please refer to the program within the Kendall Catalog to review any special technology needs for the program of study. In addition, please refer to the section titled College Policies.

We strongly recommend all students use a cloud-based backup service or purchase a portable hard drive to backup your data.

During the course of the program, requirements (either hardware or software) may change from the original technology recommendation. Make sure to consult the software/hardware requirements within the program, or with the faculty member or Dean, for any technology recommendations that may have changed since the original recommendation mentioned above or within the program of study.
